How to get started on being an actor?

Posted on June 25th, 2009

I'm currently taking drama classes in my high school and I realized that I love acting. I have a friend that might be able to get me in as an extra in a movie or two. So how should I start this?

Keep doing all the theatre at school. Get your parents' backing for your to seek a career as an actor. Take advantage of your friend's offer to help you get a job as ana extra. Get a mentor. Do some guided reading, take some professional clases, be in as many plays as you can. Learn how to audition and interview, and get an agent. This will take quite a while and your mentor can help you avoid pitfalls and scams. Click on my name, read my profile and contact me at my aol address for more info.

    1. Take the extra work, take any work, but remember that it will never make you an actor.
    2. Watch as much theatre as humanly possible — and preferably professional theatre — Lincoln Centre standard but also good, brave experimental work like Riot Group.
    3. Get the best voice training you can afford. Rowena Balos is excellent.
    4. Never stop going to classes between jobs and auditions.
    5. Preferably go to a good acting school — Yale Drama School or the like.
These are serious suggestions, and they'll give you a chance.
Good luck. (I forgot to mention to try to remember that you're doing this because you love it, so try to keep that joy.)
