How to make investment for casting?

How would you go about making investment for casting? It is similar to plaster but not the same thing, what is different? Does any one know what the ingredients are?

I might have access to powdered alumina and powdered zircon sand, which I think are ingredients.

you want silica sand and plaster.
The proportions are a bit variable, but if you use 50% plaster and 50% silica sand if should be a usable investment. If you have sand of different grain sizes that generally preferable to all the same ones (supposed to give investment more stability). After you burned out your first batch of investment the used molds can be ground up (you have to use a respirator or get silicosis down the line) and added to the investment instead of part of the sand.

There is an alternative that was used in a class I took.

Making a ceramic shell around the wax.
This company has there own secret formula.
